It’s a Pink Moon tonight. The first full moon of Spring.

“Pink Moon” is a term that makes me think of a musical genius who died too young- Nick Drake. Nick has been compared to Vincent van Gogh because neither were recognized for their great talent while they were alive, both suffered from depression and both when “discovered” became admired for what they brought to their craft and their unique expression to our collective humanity- exceptionally so.
Music like this makes me think that good things come from hard times. Transmuting the challenge of being human into art.
I think that this time and going forward for the next few years (which I see as having HUGE societal and global challenges), are going to yield great art…I am hoping that humans will want human made art…
This next video I would like to encourage you to watch. It’s about AI in the art world and what has happened because there was not careful thought (well, maybe by the companies that stole art from artists…) about the crimes being committed by AI companies and the challenges ahead for creatives:
It’s probably the most poignant explanation of the outright insidious theft that took place that destroyed careers (present tense too). So…like I said- humans as artists. The role of an artist is to express what it is to be human, to reflect the society at the time, to create beauty and meaning, to evoke emotion, to contribute to cultural identity, to explain something about the world etc…
I use AI and I think it’s an incredibly useful tool. I use it to research, I use it to compare this thing with that, I use it to get different points of view… I use it to summarize long papers etc….I use it to brainstorm and to do all kinds of automated tasks. But, I don’t use it to steal.
Ok, that’s it for my rant about that… back to transmuting things. I heard an interview today where the interviewee described the ups and down in life as “movement”. I like that…that you won’t stay at a point forever, that you are in movement no matter where you are in the scheme of things and there is a sort of leveling in that description- a lack of judgment for where one is in the movement.
Everything is in motion and ever changing…moving.
Years ago when I was living up at Ocean Song, I was in conversation with the head gardener. We were digging around in the earth planting seedlings when he started talking about his brother, a geologist. His brother said that everything we see around us is always in motion, but because of our short lives we cannot perceive the movement…it takes longer than our lives to unfold. The seemingly stable ground is actually moving and changing.
The other day I came across this video with some of the latest image from the James Webb Space Telescope showing space in motion:
Incredible, right? That’s something I hadn’t realized. I mean, I knew of course, that the planets are in motion in their orbits and about meteors, pulsars etc. but there is something about seeing these images that makes everything feel more alive. Everything is always in motion…including us.
To be human is hard. No instruction manual and we just feel it all out as we go doing the best we can. That is precisely what makes it hard- we feel- unlike AI. We can go out into nature and connect with it and feel a part of something bigger- because we are. We can have our hearts broken and we can heal and we can fall in love again- we move through life and ride the complicated ups and downs…and we can look out into a night sky and see the first full moon of Spring.
Happy Pink Moon.

Steph
